It may be a mundane chore, but making your bed every morning has a surprising benefit: It can lead to better productivity and well-being. That’s according to Charles Duhigg in his book The Power of Habit. His research shows that the daily habit of making your bed can lead to other small changes in your life.

But even if you don’t subscribe to such thinking, fixing your bed right after you wake up is, indeed, a good everyday practice. Want to up your bed-making game? Here are a few tips that will make your bed look Pinterest-worthy.

Work around a color palette. The easiest way to determine your color scheme is to work with the palette of your duvet or bedsheet set. Whether it’s colorful, minimalist, or monochromatic, your bedsheet or duvet will determine the rest of your beddings, pillows, and accessories.

Here’s a practical tip: Get a reversible duvet cover. The design on the opposite side, when turned down, provides a contrast to the dominant print of your styled bed. Having two prints in one duvet cover gives you more options.  For instance, if the “underside” of the cover sports geometric prints, you can use that side for when you want to change up your theme. It’s like having two duvet covers for the price of one!

Pile on the pillows! Nothing spells “comfy” than a bed of plush pillows. To pull off this look for a queen-sized bed, layer two queen pillows under two queen shams. Top it them off with two or three accent pillows or one bolster pillow.

For a king-sized bed, use two king shams on top of three standard pillows. Then add three smaller accent pillows or three standard pillows plus three Euro shams.

A sham is a decorative pillowcase used with normal-sized pillows. It’s a “false front” pillow cover, hence the name. Shams come in three sizes: standard sham (26” x 20”), king sham (36” x 20”) and Euro sham (26” x 26”).

Make sure to match the standard pillows with your bed sheet or duvet for a more cohesive look. The other pillows can complement the color scheme you prefer.

Play with textures. Adding textures is a fool-proof way to create a more luxe bed. When using accent pillows, choose ones that have textures. These can be knitted, quilted, velvet, or woven. If you want a cozier look, casually drape a textured throw over the foot of the bed. Here’s a hack: You can also use a thick stole or scarf as a throw.

Invest on quality. Your bedroom is a sanctuary where you retreat to rest and relax, so don’t hesitate to invest in quality items especially when it comes to beddings. Remember that a perfectly styled bed will never make up for poor-quality bed linens.

Go for bed sheets, duvets, blankets, and pillow covers with at least 200 to 250 thread count. Anything below that will only feel scratchy and uncomfortable to the touch—something you don’t want to endure when you want a good sleep. If you have the budget, why not invest in sheets with a higher thread count (about 300 to 400)?

The same goes for choosing pillows. Down- or feather-filled pillows are your best bet if you want them to last years (with proper care, of course). They also retain their softness even after years of use. Avoid pillows or cushions with cheap stuffing; these may seem soft to the touch at first, but they will eventually lose their plushiness over time.
